i never knew that the cape had so many famous modernist residents and houses: walter gropius summered there, marcel breur, the saarinen family, florence and hans knoll, max ernst and many others.

read here about the cape cod modern house trust that is raising money to restore these mid-century modern gems, three of which are available for rent: hatch cottage (1961), the kugel/gips souse (1970), and the weidlinger house (1953) all in wellfleet, ma. see: cape cod modern house trust

more about the book cape cod modern can be found here: artbook, architectural digest, wall street journal, new york magazine. and photographer raimund koch’s website

more about hatch house can be found on the blog painting box and there is a nice post on the artist enclave here.

rainer is most famous for his bentwood stacking chairs.

architect roland rainer’s summer house in st. margarethen, austria.

rainer (1910-2004) was an austrian architect, urban planner, writer and teacher. he built his summer house by an old roman quarry using rough- hewn limestone blocks. the interiors are minimalist, almost monastic, warmed by use of natural materials and wood.
